i just realized
for about the fourth time
in my sixteen year life
that nothing
is as it seems.

never trust a dog
same goes for a man.
they can beg.
they can speak.
they can play fetch.
but don't look one in the eyes.
and don't expect
infinite friendliness.
just as you are befriending
the mangy mutt
they can turn around
and bite you in the face.
or they'll get of the leash
and run for the hills.
